RIP Nick Cardy (1920-2013)

The Fellowship is saddened at the passing of Nick Cardy this evening at the age of 93. He is best know for his art on AQUAMAN and TEEN TITANS.

According to a Facebook post from Walter Simonson, Cardy passed away 9:35pm. Todd Dezago has posted on the day before that "Nick's congestive heart failure and respiratory issues are too far along for the Doctors to treat any further. We have called in Hospice and they are keeping him comfortable and free of any pain. He is sleeping and smiling, dreaming, and gently slipping away."

Cardy started drawing for DC Comics in the 1950s for such books as GANG BUSTERS and TOMAHAWK. In the 1960s, he did art for AQUAMAN and TEEN TITANS, two titles he would become associated with. During the early 1970s, he did several covers for DC including: ACTION COMICS, BATMAN, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, WORLD'S FINEST, FLASH, and WONDER WOMAN just to name a few.

Cardy left comics in the mid-70s to do movie advertising art for such films as Neil Simon's California Suite (1978), and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979) among others. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2005.

Cardy was also earned the Purple Heart twice for his services during World War II.

As a personal note, I am a big fan of his work. I started reading comics in the early 70s, so I remember his covers with great fondness. I wish I could have had a chance to meet him.

Thank you for everything Mr. Cardy, you will be missed.
