I'm reading this morning that Universal is seriously thinking about doing a 3D version of the famous first-person shooter video game DOOM. If you remember, there was a version released back in 2005 starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karl Urban (the future Dr. McCoy and Judge Dredd), and Rosamund Pike (one-time hopeful Lois Lane, now the new Andromeda in the Clash of the Titans sequel).According to the website What's Playing...
"Universal own the rights to the film and though they’ve always been keen on doing another Doom movie sometime, the success of Paramount’s G.I Joe : Rise of Cobra piqued their interest even more. [Universal] is said to be script scouting for a Doom movie that’ll make full advantage of contemporary cinema’s richest weapon - 3D."
The film followed the game to a degree - a group of Space Marines are sent to investigate strange events at a research facility on Phobos, but find themselves at the mercy of genetically enhanced killing machines. The problem is it wasn't a virus in the game, it was an invasion from a hell dimension. Overall, the movie was decent, but not great. The best part was the sequence that re-created the "first-person view" of the game.
I'm kinda curious and hope for a better movie, but am surprised that this decision is based on the "success" of the G.I. Joe movie. Hmm....
